Researchers at the University of Liverpool, in partnership with data scientists at Pusan National University, South Korea, are helping to improve the efficiency and reliability of Liverpool’s public transport. The KUDATA (Korea-UK Digital Twin Approach for Transport Analysis) project has involved the creation of a ‘digital twin’ of the city region’s public transport network, enabling changes to routes, timetables and fares to be trialled virtually before being rolled out on the region’s public transport network. This allows for the impact of changes to services to be assessed on communities ahead of them being introduced.
The first phase of the KUDATA project focused on part of the region’s bus network, with the second phase expanding to cover the whole region and wider transport system, including using data from rail services and walking and cycling routes. As part of the enhanced ‘digital twin’ model, AI will be used to suggest network improvements to make services more accessible, with a particular focus on more disadvantaged communities.
