Data from the 2021 census suggests that there are 5 million people providing unpaid care in England and Wales, at an estimated value of £162 billion per annum.
In response to this, researchers at the Centre for Care at the University of Sheffield, in partnership with Carers UK, the South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, and people with lived experience of care, created and developed the Unpaid Care Dashboard. The Dashboard is an interactive tool which draws on census data (2011 and 2021) to enable users to explore trends in who is providing unpaid care within local authorities and compare this with other places in England and Wales. The aim of the dashboard is to help policymakers, practitioners and the public understand unpaid carers nationally and locally, and can also be used to help inform decisions around how resources might be changed to support local populations in response to patterns of care provision.
