The Urban Big Data Centre at the University of Glasgow uses innovative data approaches combined with socially engaged research to understand and positively shape cities and their communities, both in the UK and internationally. Research themes at the centre include housing and neighbourhoods, transport and mobility, environment and health, participatory analysis, and city modelling and sensing. Examples of such research include using open data from traffic counts and air quality monitoring to assess the effectiveness of Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone, using remote sensing to understand complex urban environments including how to better design green/blue infrastructure, and the design and development of a participatory data-modelling ecosystem which produces deprived area maps in cities in lower middle-income countries to support local decision-making.
