Watch: What can the devolved governments do to address the cost-of-living crisis?

On 21 April, we were very pleased to partner with the Centre for Public Policy at the University of Glasgow on a webinar exploring devolved governments’ responses to the cost-of-living crisis.

Surveys have consistently identified the cost of living as the most important issue among voters ahead of the elections for the Scottish Parliament and the Senedd – but the public are not always sure what devolved governments can do within their spheres of constitutional powers to reduce the costs of living. Our panel explored the devolved governments’ powers to act, and the solutions being offered by the political parties’ manifestoes.

The panel was chaired by Kezia Dugdale FAcSS (Associate Director, Centre for Public Policy, University of Glasgow) and involved contributions from Professor Nicola McEwen FAcSS (Director, Centre for Public Policy, University of Glasgow) and Dr Hefin Gwilym (Lecturer in Social Policy, Bangor University).

The Campaign for Social Science Devolution Hub showcases research and evidence-led insights from leading social scientists, through written contributions and events, to shine a light on devolved and sub-national government in the UK, including how the different polities across the UK might learn from each other, and whether the inconsistencies of the UK’s devolution map are an inherent strength or a challenge for a harmonious union of regions and nations.
