The Academy expresses its deep admiration, respect and heartfelt thanks for the Queen’s 70 years of exemplary service and duty; sends our profound condolences to her family on her death, and wishes the very best to the newly proclaimed King Charles III.
Over her long reign Queen Elizabeth touched every corner of national life with her grace and gentle but penetrating questions, wit and humour. Of course it fell to her famously to ask economists why no-one had noticed that something was wrong in the financial markets before the financial crash – putting us as social scientists on notice that the sovereign notices our work along with our mistakes. We strive to do better. She is irreplaceable and we share the view of so many millions – she was the mortar that held the national house together.
