As part of our work towards sustaining the pipeline of diverse social science talent, we’ve refreshed our careers in social science webpages to help promote the skills, knowledge and diversity of careers available through studying social science at school and beyond.
Aimed at secondary school students choosing their GCSEs and A Levels, and university students studying social science at university, the new webpages provide a range of information including what to expect when studying social science at secondary school and beyond, the transferable skills gained, and indications of potential earnings in different careers, as well as links to useful resources from other organisations, including the Academy’s member learned societies.
As part of the updated careers hub, there is a suite of new written and video interviews with professional social scientists working in a range of roles across a number of sectors. Dr Ellie Brown shares her unusual career journey which started as her training to be a solicitor and led to her becoming Director of Impact at education charity Get Further; James Oyuke, who studied business at university, provides insight into what he does in his day-to-day role as Director of Mergers and Acquisitions at a financial advisory firm; Kiran Krishna, Principal Economist at the Information Commissioner’s Officer, gives her advice to someone wanting to study social science and much more. The Academy will continue to add to the I’m a social scientist profiles on a regular basis to share more inspirational insights on social science careers.
