A Level results day: social sciences increasingly popular among students

The Academy of Social Sciences congratulates everyone receiving their A Level results today.

This year’s results paint a positive picture of the number of students studying social science subjects at A Level in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Psychology, sociology, business studies and economics are ranked in the top 10 most studied subjects at A Level, with geography (+2.2%), law (+2.4%) and political studies (+8.1%) also seeing increases in the number of students choosing to study them at A Level.

Dr Rita Gardner, Chief Executive of the Academy, said: “We’re delighted to see a balance across both science and social science subjects being studied at A Level. The knowledge, skills and ways of thinking that the social sciences provide open up a huge range of opportunities for young people to thrive in their future careers and to benefit society as a whole. To find and implement solutions to many of the world’s greatest challenges, an understanding and application of both social sciences and STEM is critical.”
