Founder of Teenshare, and Private Banking Relationship Manager at Dah Sing Private Bank

Louis is the founder of startup TeenShare, an online mentoring platform which aims to support young people in their career aspirations. Louis is also a private banking relationship manager at Dah Sing Private Bank where he provides wealth management advice and supports clients to meet their financial goals.

How did you get to where you are now?

My journey began at Swansea University, where I studied Accounting and Finance. This enabled me to build a strong foundation in understanding key financial concepts and accounting theory and developed my problem-solving skills.

From there, I was able to get some key experiences in banking and entrepreneurship. I held positions in banking operations, corporate banking and private banking in Hong Kong which really propelled my career. These experiences gave me lots of opportunities to engage with diverse individuals, including C-level executives (people who hold the highest positions in a company like the Chief Financial Officer or CEO), as well as government officials, foundation and non-government organisations (NGOs). This exposure instilled in me the confidence to interact with anyone and treat them as equals.

What do you do in your current role?

As the founder of TeenShare, I oversee the strategic planning of the company, foster key partnerships, drive product development, and efficiently manage company resources. This allows me to connect diverse talent and professionals to help youth gain valuable career skills through the company. My background in social science helps me to understand key principles in market dynamics and human behaviour – which are both crucial for developing TeenShare’s mentoring platform and connecting different professionals with the correct university career and entrepreneur training programmes.

Alongside this, in my role as Relationship Manager at the Dah Sing Private Bank, I manage my own clients and offer them tailored wealth management services so they can meet their financial goals.

“The social sciences provide valuable insights into the world, including those that drive policy, innovation and solutions to enhance our understanding of, and ability to improve society.”

What skills do you need for this role?

I would say leadership, strategic thinking, communication, people management, financial literacy and an understanding of social dynamics and technological trends are all important skills for what I do.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy seeing young people succeed and the positive impact our platform has on their lives and careers – it gives me a sense of achievement to know that we are empowering young people and helping to bridge the gap between education and employment.

Why did you choose to study social science?

I chose to study social science to gain an understanding of societal structures and human behaviour. This knowledge is vital for creating impactful solutions, like TeenShare, and it as allowed me to further develop my personal skills, enabling me to build long term relationships with clients and colleagues.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

I envision expanding TeenShare globally, and hopefully further reducing youth unemployment through innovative solutions as a result.

What would you say to someone considering studying or pursuing a career in the social sciences?

The social sciences provide valuable insights into the world, including those that drive policy, innovation and solutions to enhance our understanding of, and ability to improve society. In my experience, social science certainly empowers you to make meaningful contributions across various fields. I would say embrace the courage to try and fail, reassess your weaknesses to try and improve with each challenge, learn from your experiences and become your own mentor.
