The Return of the Experts?
Facts and Expertise in the Digital Age
Analyses of ‘fake news’ have become all the rage following unexpected results in last June’s EU referendum and the 2016 US Presidential Election. This has been accompanied by popular backlash against experts and the role of facts in public and political life.
But has it been a factor in the UK General Election? Have the experts managed to stem its tide?
Will Moy, Director of Full Fact, will examine:
- ‘Fake news’ in the General Election campaign and what measures have been taken to combat it
- How the (mis)use of facts and statics affects campaigning and political discourse, especially through digital media
- The role of digital literacy and engaged citizens in interpreting and spreading full facts
A discussant (tba) will be invited to respond.
Tickets include a wine reception following the talk, as well as opportunities for networking.
